Microcosmic Mandala
The great architect Kieth Critchlow once described a mandala as “seeing the whole universe at once.” In these works, I combine hand-drawn geometric studies with backgrounds derived from watercolor paintings and my Translucence series of macro photography. My aim is to blend organic forms with archetypal geometric structures.
The resulting prints are 24 inches square, mounted on wooden frames and finished with layers of encaustic wax. The wax adds depth and texture to the images, creating a luminous effect in some areas and a soft opacity in others. And it evokes a connection to honeybees — the great geometers of the insect realm. The prints even smell of honey up close.
