Biography:

Samuel Allison (born USA, 1982) is an artist, writer and teacher of art and photography.

He got his craftsmanship the old fashioned way, directly from masters in their studios. As a teenager he lived in Kathmandu, learning Tibetan thangka painting in a traditional workshop. After graduating from Wesleyan University, he was awarded a fellowship for a yearlong photography and oral history project in Varanasi, where he was influenced by many Indian artists. On the Olympic Peninsula he apprenticed with sculptor and furniture maker Seth Rolland. In Spain, he studied drawing at the Barcelona Academy of Art. Most recently he learned intaglio, or copperplate engraving, with printmaker Gilberto Guerrero Sanchez in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

In 2022 he got his MFA in studio art from the University of New York at Buffalo, where he also taught observational drawing. In addition to teaching at university level, he leads workshops on the ancient art of drawing geometry by hand.

Artist Statement:

As a multimedia artist, I’m always looking to balance a traditional approach to design and craftsmanship with playful experimentation. A lot of my studio time goes into tinkering with new ways to combine elements of drawing, photography, printmaking, painting and sculpture. The projects that interest me over time always start off with a strong idea or intention, but then take an unpredictable journey towards results I never could have anticipated.
